How Do You Keep in Touch?

Are you good at keeping in touch with family back home while you’re studying abroad? A survey by UK insurance company Endsleigh found families now contact each other primarily by text – 60 percent of young people reported using texts to update their parents on their lives. Second most popular was email (36 percent).

If text seems a little too brief, social networking sites can fill the gap. However, 72 percent of people aged between 18 and 25 reported not being friends with their parents on facebook – a good way of keeping party photos and incriminating messages away from the prying eyes of mom and dad.

Rise in International Maritime Piracy

Pirates may sound like they belong in a storybook or a blockbuster film but the reality is much different. According to the U.S. Department of State, the number of pirate attacks has risen significantly. Americans travelling by sea should be careful when sailing through certain coastal danger zones.

Piracy happens all over the world but the coasts of Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Venezuela and Yemen are particularly problematic. In Africa, most attacks happen in the Gulf of Arden off the coast of Somalia.

Pirates, while most often targeting commercial ships, do attack private yachts.

Dangers of Mixing Energy Drinks with Alcohol

Energy drinks are popular with hardworking and partying students. While there’s nothing wrong with a little pick-up, experts believe mixing energy drinks with alcohol could cause health problems.

Energy drinks, which contain caffeine, taurine and carbohydrates among other substances, have a stimulating effect on the central nervous system. According to 2007 research from the University of Messina, Italy around 27 percent of the total sample of students studied mixed energy drinks and alcohol. Experts said combining a stimulant, the energy drink, with a sedative, alcohol, to mask the undesired effects of both drugs could lead to addiction and alcohol-related dangers. <
